We ‘… didn’t need to do this.’

Before noon today, President Trump dragged us through another vaudeville show of doublespeak, juggling and the dialogue of a second banana.  Again, we heard about marauding gangs, crying women in the back seats of cars and trucks and most disgracefully of all, using the surviving members of a serious crime as mortar for his frivolous vanity wall.  I grieve as all Americans do when I see the pained look of Angel Moms who have lost their children, husbands, and fathers. More people have been killed in verified mass shootings in this country in the first 2 months of 2019 than all the reported murders perpetrated by immigrants on American citizens in the last 2 years.  According to the Congressional Research Service stats of 2010, you are nearly five times more likely to be assaulted, raped or murdered by a citizen than a non-citizen in the United States.  One might even conclude that the dip in the crime rate has coincided with the increase of migrants to this country.

I have concluded that the problem is not the wild, most times unintelligible meanderings of a would-be despot, but it is the soberness with which we accept it. We have heard for weeks that the President was being led around by the nose by the likes of conservative radio and TV and we all knew what was coming. Today the President did what was expected and the pundits gnashed the public’s teeth. Talk host giggled at the confused language of Trump’s Rose Garden soliloquy, lines like, “I am going to be signing a national emergency. And it's been signed many times before. It's been signed by other presidents. There’s rarely been a problem,” followed a few minutes later with the words“ I didn’t need to do this.” That is like calling the fire department and saying, my house is on fire but I really did not need to make this call.

As a part of his scheme, Mr. Trump is going to take from the Defense Department 2.5 billion dollars earmarked for drug interdiction to build a wall for drug interdiction.  Yes, the answer to the riddle of what gets bigger the more you take out of it…is a hole.  The hole of leadership in the country gets bigger every day.  The Jeff Flake clones in the Republican party know this so-called national emergency is a farce, but Susan Collins, Marco Rubio and Ron Johnson who gave lip service to its un-Constitutionality will not lift a finger to stop it if a vote comes to the Senate.

The alternative fact machine of Fox News will throw a few doggies treats the President’s way tonight because he sat up and played nice for them. They will rub his golden coat (skipping the bald spot) and if he is really good, they will rub his tummy. The problem with Trump is that not only does he play fetch but he has a loyal group of sniffers in his kennel.  Instead of allowing his trainers to guide the country we need to yank the leash and pull our country back before we are all hit by oncoming traffic.  We don’t need to do this.
