Electile Dysfunction

Ok, Democrats, I know you have not traditionally stood up to vote in midterm elections but now is not the time to go limp.  Former President Bill Clinton lost his bid to move forward with a more liberal agenda in 1994, and former President Barack Obama described his midterm beatings as shellackings.  Both men had the ideas we said we wanted but were unable to close the deal because America refused to let them get to third base.  Ok, ok—I agree, enough with the innuendo.

I started with an attempt at humor because it seems we have two types of voters in this country those motivated by fear, the Republicans, and those motivated by humor, the Democrats.  Jimmy Carter heard enough peanut jokes to supply Planters nuts for a millennium and Ronald Reagan told us “welfare queens” were stealing America blind. George H.W. Bush warned us of Voodoo, and Bill Clinton played saxophone for Arsenio.  George W. Bush created the axis of evil to scare the sox off us and Barack Obama’s biggest scandal was wearing a tan suit.  Yes, on occasion Republicans would mix in their second banana with some comic relief. We had Dan, “potatoe (sic) Quayle and Sarah, “hockey Mom” Palin.

The overriding construct is fear.

From Willie Horton menacingly staring at your wives and daughters through your tv screen to caravans of rapist and thieves waiting to descend upon America, Republicans have made fear an art form.  We literally went from “Hope and Change” to ‘American carnage...’ Two things do stick out amongst those President’s policies, Republicans got us into debt, more often than not, and Democrats wasted their Presidential capital getting us out.  Over 30 years ago Reagan introduced us to “trickle down” and we have been raising umbrellas ever since.  The last two Democratic Presidents either eliminated or reduced the ‘dreaded’ deficits Republicans warned will sentence our children to abject poverty, except when they get into office—then deficits do not matter.

The deficit tripled by 3 trillion dollars under the Reagan administration and Clinton left office with a surplus of 1.9 billion dollars by 1999.  Running the numbers during the Bush 43 administration is so laughable in comparison to Barack Obama it is hardly worth the time.  Of course, the most glaring was that President George W. Bush nearly drove the economy into bankruptcy and Barack Obama hauled the bus out of the ditch and repaired the tires. Donald Trump is still driving on those patched tires.

So, America here we are again, this time with a wanna-be clown dictator. One who is not intentionally trying to be funny but is intentionally scaring us.  So, this election is truly in the hands of both sides.  Republicans voters are the lies, fear-mongering, racism, misogyny, xenophobia and now anti-Semitism worth a few extra dollars in your paycheck.  Democrats you have sat back long enough and laughed nightly at, both Jimmy(s) and Stephen but it is time to stop smiling and vote. If America ever needed a blue wave pill to straighten out its problems, it is now.

1 Day left: VOTE TOMORROW FOR CHANGE.
