Take America Forward Again

The recent rise of White Supremacy, misogyny and the idea of ethnic cleansing is not new.

Following the most horrific era in American history, slavery, the Reconstruction Era was established.  Rights of recently freed slaves and the unicorn of creating an even playing field were the new law of the land. In December of that same year, in 1865, the ‘circle of the clan was formed, the KKK, their mission, make America great again. It is no coincidence that following two terms of America’s first African American President the circle is forming once again.

Championed by a President who thinks that among, cowards, racist and murderers are some, “fine people” the southern mindset is trying to rise again.

But I have some hope…

One week ago, tomorrow, a daughter of the south, Virginia, rejected Trumpism and voted for the continued evolution of the American Revolution. I am holding my breath, but I hope to exhale deeply next November.  If we examine the two periods of history closely the reactions by parts of white America are eerily similar.  When blacks voted in such significant numbers in the South that political offices became attainable for people of color voter suppression was the answer. When that did not work violence was condoned by local governments and was approved by the federal government’s Compromise of 1877.

The return of voter suppression

Following the election of Barack H. Obama and a vow by Mitch McConnell to make his [Obama] one term a tormented cavalcade of obstructionist rhetoric, voter suppression efforts skyrocketed. White supremacist, who no longer burn crosses and hide behind a mask, are carrying Tiki torches and burning up social media. That seemed harmless until Charlottesville, Virginia.  There a mob of cowards upped their game and ran down and killed Heather Heyer with an automobile; it was a lynching, with six cylinders.

Following that was an outcry of emotion and I held on to hope.  The President got involved and the clan felt vindicated. David Duke thanked President Trump for his support and indicated they were there for him.  The desire of bigots and racist to take back America is being galvanized by Donald Trump. Well into the 20th Century racist groups justified their evil by proclaiming they were saving America from the hordes of an invading culture that would ruin their country. The KKK was just righteous defenders of the country. President Woodrow Wilson was a friend of Thomas Dixon Jr., who wrote the book, The Clansman, and inspired DW Griffith’s Birth of a Nation. The movie was privately screened in the Whitehouse, over objections from the NAACP, for President Wilson and select friends.

The echoes of Birth of a Nation can often be heard in Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric, his pro-abuse stance of the handling of criminals and the equating of tyrannical White neo-Nazi groups with viable protesters is detestable.

I have a short story…

I voted last Tuesday in Pennsylvania. We had local elections on two referendums, local judgeships, and District Attorney. I have voted in every local and national election in Philadelphia for the 9 years I have lived here and for the first time, an election official questioned my signature. I informed her, she should question a signature if it is identical to the registration because that would indicate forgery. No one ever signs exactly the same way twice; our signatures are like snowflakes similar but never identical.

Mr. Trump, I am not going to count jelly beans in a jar, or give a list of every state judge by name or pay a poll tax. You may think you are instituting the Birth of a new Nation, but you are only killing an already great one.

Vote in 18’ for Change.
