Yesterday, a combative and rightfully angry President Joe Biden fought back against a wholly disrespectful—to the rule of law—report from the Department of Justice.
Special counsel Robert Hur found that no charges should be brought against Joe Biden for possessing classified documents, but that was not the end. Before former President Donald Trump so perverted American justice with hand-picked partisans and woefully unqualified judges, Mr. Hur’s party affiliation should not come into question. But, alas, that is not the reality we live in. Judge Aileen Cannon met the prerequisites to be appointed a judge, but before serving on the Florida bench, her judicial experience was as a prosecutor in Fort Pierce, Florida. Now Judge Cannon, also a Trump appointee, oversees one of the most significant cases in America’s history. Did a former president steal, cloister, and lie to the FBI about possessing classified information?
Due to the Trump administration, other first-time judges are on the federal bench. Former President Donald Trump picked a young and inexperienced judge from Kentucky [Justin Walker, 37] for an open seat on the influential federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., in 2020.ThenSenate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y) pointed out that Walker was less than ten years out of law school, had never tried a case, never served as co-counsel, and got a rare “not qualified” rating from the American Bar Association. In the case of Robert Hur, no one questions his qualifications, just his motives. A Trump appointee via former Attorney General Jeff Sessions served as a clerk to Justice Rehnquist and was tapped as special counsel for the Biden case by the current Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Yesterday, Mr. Hur gave us his best Jim Comey impression. If you have forgotten, Comey, the former FBI Director, issued a statement in the months leading up to the 2016 election clearing Hillary Clinton of wrongdoing “about her emails” but offered a prejudicial opinion in what law enforcement considers nonrelevant information, saying Mrs. Clinton had been “extremely careless” even though she committed no crime. Comey further inserted himself into the 2016 election, reopening a specious investigatory process 11 days before the election, also clearing the former Secretary of State.
Hur editorialized his finding on the same day as Donald Trump’s Colorado ballot eligibility case; oral arguments were brought before the Supreme Court. He cleared the President with a scathing critique of President Biden as a sympathetic elderly man with a faulty memory. “Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,”Hur writes. Mr. Biden made it clear that his memory was fine, as was his ire. “I know what the hell I’m doing,” said an agitated Biden. Like most things, Biden, the truth is lost in the faux turmoil. A great economy is sacrificed to the country’s malaise. Leadership is viewed as just a lucky break, and now a finding of innocence is transformed into a referendum on his age.
This time in history is being chronicled in detail and will be included in college courses someday. “Lordy, I hope there are tapes.”
