Yesterday’s failed vote by Republicans to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is part of a continued strategy to portray Democrats as a danger to America. In reality, once again, the GOP has revealed their real motives, chaos, and sleight of hand. Despite denials from House Speaker Mike Johnson that he does not call the shots in the House of Representatives, common sense wisdom is that Donald Trump is dictating how the House Republicans vote. Donald Trump tossed the immigration Frisbee in the air, and MAGA rose on their hind legs and barked. Keeping the border in the news and attempting to impeach Mayorkas is what Republicans view as a strategy. The GOP does not legislate or do what good governing requires: compromise. Their wish for stand-alone legislation—a claim they have said they wanted, even failed to pass, as evidenced by the no vote on funding Israel.
Yesterday’s display in the Congressional Big Top featured Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who claims the Democrats tricked Republicans when a recently hospitalized member, Al Green (D-TX), showed up to vote against impeachment. “They [Democrats] hid one of their members, waiting until the last minute watching the CR votes, trying to throw us off from the numbers we had versus the numbers they had… that was a strategy at play tonight,”said Greene. Greene has become the reason kids point and laugh. Her party is content to dress up MTG in oversized shoes and a clown nose, firing off the cannons of distractions. The Grand Old Party does not want the immigration issue off the table. The GOP learned the lesson of overturning Roe v. Wade. Catching the car is not a political strategy; the chase is what keeps it a winning issue.
For years, the conventional thinking on both sides of the aisle was women’s right to body autonomy was safe as long as Americans were fooled into believing it was a political issue and not a human rights issue. Women fleeing states to—literally—save their lives and, in one infamous case, protect the rights of parents and an underage raped girl. Democrats were lulled into the hypnosis of that thinking, failing to push for abortion rights to be codified into law. Meanwhile, Republicans were on a relentless fifty-year quest to control a woman’s body and dictate family sizes to couples. Former President Reagan addressed the Right to Life March by phone, and Donald Trump became the first President to attend the march. Both Republican presidents were former Democrats, and one [Donald Trump] advocated pro-choice in 1999.
The GOP has become proficient at symbolism and message, but neither approach legislates effectively. President Biden agreed he would sign a mainly Republican-leaning bill on immigration, giving up some Democratic principles. The Republican response was to impeach his Homeland Security Secretary. What once was Right to Life marchers carrying aloft pictures of bloody fetuses has morphed into photos of migrants climbing fences punctuated with stories of an imaginary immigrant crime wave. Conservatives have convinced us they favor individual rights despite the fights against contraception in Estelle Griswold v. Connecticut, overturning Roe, sodomy laws aimed at the LGBTQIA+ community, banning books and history, and now democracy is on the chopping block. While the elephants march, fascism reigns in chaos and ignorance.
