It is Past Time to Pat Joe Biden on the Back

Republicans seem shocked that President Biden can string together a sentence without drooling, while Democrats like me are not surprised. Having watched the presidential debates between Donald Trump and now-President Joe Biden, watching and listening to him make a plea for the soul of America was convincing. We were in the middle of one of the worse pandemic viruses in this country’s history—with evidence coming to light that Mr. Trump knew how bad it could get and did nothing. The loss of jobs, businesses, and school closings was crippling the country. We were maudlin, masked, and miserable. It would be unfair to blame Donald Trump for all the nation’s woes, but his response, as outlined in the Bob Woodward book and the release of audio tapes, showed Mr. Trump only gave a damn about himself.

Bidenomics

In the final analysis, the 2020 election came down to competence versus the cult. The people who did not vote for Joe Biden, whether it was because they wanted a Washington outsider to fight the amorphous socialists or  Biden’s age, the choice was obvious to any honest voter. Conservative America had previously hired a plumber to remove the country’s tonsils and wondered why its throat and attitude were sore. The 80 million plus who voted for Biden have been justified and rewarded. Under Joe Biden’s leadership, America is leading the world in recovery from Covid-19: inflation recovery, wage increases, job growth, and new manufacturing. Things are not perfect; but when have they ever been? Given the wholesale disaster of the Trump years, the comparisons are laughable. Trump was successful at three things, caring for the rich, feeding the rich, and chasing riches.

President Biden has not only solidified NATO; he has strengthened it by adding Finland and Sweden. Wednesday, Mr. Biden addressed a cheering throng of well-wishers at Vilnius University in Lithuania on the heels of the latest NATO summit. The last President [Trump] attempted to extort what may be the next country to join NATO [Ukraine] in his quest to isolate Eastern Europe, jeopardizing the world’s stability.

We all remember the photos of German Chancellor Angela Merkel leaning incredulously and defiantly across the desk from Mr. Trump. His shove of the Montenegro prime ministerDuško Marković to gain position in a photo-op and subservience to Vladimir Putin embarrassed the country and belittled American intelligence agencies. In 2018 when the U.N. General Assembly laughed at Trump’s empty brags, he brought scorn onto America. The scorn directed at Joe Biden does not come from the rest of the world or Democrats or a majority of Independents. The President keeps getting things done, and the Republicans lie about it.

In the face of an inflation rate falling year-to-date from 9.1 a year ago to just above 3 percent, 30 consecutive months of job gains, an unemployment rate of 3.6 percent, and wages for the first time in years outpacing inflation, GOP Louisiana Senator John Kennedy bit off a big piece of cornpone. “ When it comes to economics, President Biden is like a hog on ice,”said Kennedy. I have no idea what it means either, but again he is not appealing to clear thinkers.
