Morality... the Intellectual Excuse

Donald Trump, gritting his teeth like the dogs once set upon protesters in the Bull Connor south of the 1960’s, denied his present and past statements as being racist yesterday.

Flanked by his wife, daughters and sons, Donald Trump awkwardly read from a teleprompter trying to soothe the frazzled nerves of fellow Republican Party members who are now eating from the tree they have spent years poisoning.  First issuing a written statement accusing those who pointed out his racist comments, as misconstruing his meaning, Mr. Trump tried lying his way through another staged event.  Republican hierarchy are now fearful that Mr. Trump will permanently lose the Hispanic vote the same way the Republicans (nee Dixiecrats) lost the Black vote following Barry Goldwater’s refusal to back the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

The most frightening aspect of the Trump act is that Democrats are now saying things like Secretary Clinton can’t win because she won’t lower herself to the demoralizing depths Mr. Trump is willing to sink.  Or the old lesser of two-evils argument.  I am appalled that any progressive, liberal or independent voter would even consider unleashing a man who openly courts the worse racist elements of America because somehow, in their minds, Hillary is worse.  A vote for Donald Trump no matter how you try and justify it with, trade disagreements, Wall Street remunerations for speeches, emails or any other nonsense that gives you the unmoral excuse to vote (by not voting) for an open racist is demoralizing.

Sitting at home is not an option when faced with stopping evil.  Telling yourself that, “I just can’t vote for Hillary” is a vote for Donald Trump. We all hold a responsibility to our fellow man to not allow America to fall into the hands of its ugly past.  I come from a lineage that had a family member die at the end of a rope, beaten at the whim of unlawful enforcers for simply attempting to vote and people who swallowed way too often and much too hard at knee bending indignation.

So you can sit in your pool of your moral righteousness, splash around and tell yourself that you are paddling in the waters of purity by not voting in the next election.  I hope you have a bigger moral commitment to people of color and women and realize even a small step forward is preferable to a giant leap backward.

Vote 2016.
