I have had my differences with former DNC Chair Donna Brazile, but her fearless stance on Sunday was truly inspiring. On ABC’s version of Let Us Tell You What You Think, Brazile boldly referred to Donald Trump as a convicted felon, not once, but three times. She stood her ground in a face-off with her counterpart, Reince Priebus, the former chair of the RNC and one of Donald Trump’s chief(s) of staff. Priebus, as predicted, recited the GOP talking points circulating among the brethren since the end of the Trump trial. He claimed the judge, the prosecutor, and the jury were all conflicted and even went as far as to falsely assert that the American people were unhappy with the verdict. Not some Republicans or Independents, maybe even select Democrats, but all of America. Last time I checked, I, along with millions, am—an American people—who are far from unhappy.
Justice was served…
… Donald Trump earned the label of a convicted felon, and Democrats need not be timid and say so. His conviction by a jury of his peers may be the most appropriate moment of ‘what about-ism’ if there ever was one. Imagine for a moment that Joe Biden had been convicted of a crime. Imagine, if you will, a president weaponizing his authority against his opponent and trying to get a foreign power; let us say Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine(to throw out a name), to falsely claim said opponent had committed an international crime, oh wait! Or say someone like Hillary Clinton had faced chants of “lock her up” led by her opponent echoing throughout the venues of his 2016 rallies; oh wait! Of course, Reince Priebus would certainly condemn these actions, but wait. “It’s just political rhetoric,” he said. “They’ll get over it,”he told New York Times Magazine in July 2016.
There were no handwringing or timid debates over using phony accusations in political language against an opponent by Republicans. In every speech, social media post, or political ad, Donald Trump refers to President Joe Biden as “crooked Joe.” Rep. James Comer ( R-KY), the House Oversight Committee chair, referred not only to Mr. Biden as crooked but also called his family a crime syndicate, repeatedly calling the president and his family the “Biden Crime Family.” The President’s son[Hunter Biden} made what would be charitably called poor decisions amid his drug addiction and goes on trial starting today for a gun possession charge. Marjorie Taylor Greene went to the lengths of publicly displaying a photo of the younger Biden’s genitalia in a House hearing.
So, before Democrats start clutching their pearls because Stormy Daniels wrote that Mr. Trump was hung like a toadstool mushroom or calling him a convict may be in bad taste, let us all take a breath and remember who is at the other end of those epithets—a twice impeached, one-term ex-president guilty of defamation and adjudicated as a sexual assaulter, now facing 54 felony counts in three jurisdictions and a CONVICTED FELON. If the timid and reluctant cannot say the word, stay in the back and let Adam Schiff (D-CA) or Donna Brazile give you the courage. On June 27, I hope to hear Joe Biden open the debate with the words, my opponent, the convicted felon Donald Trump…
