Former Attorney General Bill Barr shepherded presidents Reagan, H.W. Bush, and Trump through scandal, coverups, and election lies. After holding onto revelations that may have staved off an insurrection, his video testimony—presented by the House Committee investigating the instigators of 1/6, the left is now heralding him as a hero, and the right is calling him Judas. Barr may be doing more for the t-shirt business than the book he is hawking. Barr’s repeated use of the words b.s. is sure to be the next hottest selling T. The only real bull being slung around is Barr himself. Barr resigned from his office in mid-December of 2020. Facilitated by the House committee, Barr let the world know in the past 48 hours; that he thought the then-President [Trump] had lost touch with reality, Trump had “become detached from reality if he really believes this stuff,” said Barr.
Yet still, Barr, when asked later, said he would vote for the former President he thought was “detached” from reality. That may not be Barr’s biggest sin. His betrayal of the American people by withholding that information is his biggest failure as the people’s lawyer. Even those with the biggest sins can redeem themselves by laying bare their foibles. The press is enamored with pols, celebs, and jocks who confess. Some even endear sympathy if they don sackcloth and ashes. Republican politicians have emulated Trump’s vulgarity in the mistaken idea that crude and crass behavior engenders the phony patina of candor and honesty. In reality, what it does is lower our expectations. Once standards are abandoned, those with no character manipulate the media, colleagues, and, most tragic, the voters.
Yesterday, representative Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) laid out the grift perpetrated by the former President, raising a quarter billion dollars with a bogus legal defense fund. I am sure his defenders will say he is just smart, just as they did over his phony university, alleged illegal devaluing of his properties to evade taxes, and grabbing women by the p#$@y.
Barr’s theory of the unitary executive powers of the presidency was the perfect shield for Trump’s battle against the rule of law. Barr applied for the job of AG by appealing to Trump’s lust for power by issuing a memo confirming the idea of an imperial presidency. So, now the Congress, pundits, and the American people are embroiled in litigating the obvious. Despite what the GOP tells you, there is no doubt that the Capitol was violently and without merit attacked. Undoubtedly, the former President’s lawyer [Rudy Giuliani] called for a “trial by combat.” No doubt, the former President told the crowd to “fight like Hell” before instructing them to march to the Capitol.
Former AG Barr knew the reason for the attack on the Capitol was based on a foolish lie. Barr’s first allegiance was to the country; instead, he chose not to jeopardize his book deal and go on speaking tours to rehabilitate his broken image. Barr decided to breathe life into the lie by defending the former President and lying about cases of rampant mail-in ballot fraud, and hiding the truth from the people he swore to protect and serve. Barr is no hero; he was the accessory to a serial liar while living in a detached reality of his own.
