Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper is the latest disgraced member of the Trump administration looking to cleanse their soul of the stench of sulfur. In a book to be released May 10, Esper confirmed that Mr. Trump wondered aloud why the people who gathered to protest the murder of George Floyd could not be shot. “Can’t you just shoot them?”Trump asked, according to Esper.“Just shoot them in the legs or something?” It seems odd that the President, who is still vehemently defending the rioters who killed police officers and caused the death of one of their own—at the Capitol, snow-flaked over an actual televised murder of a citizen.
With all their hollow proselytizing, how quickly the GOP forgets the full breadth of the biblical quote, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself….” Trying to follow false prophets, like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Roger Stone, who see Satan around every corner, is an ominous sign of what will happen to America if the Republicans recapture the House and Senate in November. According to polling experts (the same ones who said Biden had no chance), democracy is in peril. Fortunately, there are emerging signs that Democrats can recover. However, prospects are still bleak for Democrats holding on.
Why is it so hard to convince so-called Christians who believe in the literal parting of the Red Sea and talking snakes that Love thy neighbor is more than a metaphor?
I am generally loathed to wax on about religion, but this is my attempt to reach people’s hearts and pull their sanity back from tumbling over the fence. Have we forgotten portable refrigerated morgue trucks because hospitals were overrun due to a leader who called the virus a hoax, recommending instead the ingesting of bleach and unproven cures? Have the photos of a drowned father and his daughter been washed away by xenophobic hatred; what happened to the ‘least of these?’ I grew up in a religious household, but I am also aware that the mixture of fear, faith, and fantasy can be dangerous. For decades the Republican party has leaned on fear to control their voting base, fear of the browns, blacks, Jews, and other marginalized people. Those fears morphed into the silent majority that imagined attacks on Christianity and blamed godlessness as the real culprit for what was wrong in America.
The natural evolution is fantasy,
Space lasers, rigged elections, satanic worship, and evil pizza parlor owners, nothing, it seems, is too far off the path. Originally a Nixon dirty trickster and now an ardent Trump acolyte, Roger Stone says he has video of a satanic portal over the White House. Instead of being laughed off the stage and Sandman Sims giving him the hook, it will not be surprising to see him gain a bigger following.
My great-grandmother was an invalid in her last years of life. Before that, we lived in Northeast Washington, DC. Behind our home was a car repair shop, and the local boys and men would gather to drink cheap wine. Often they would be blurry-eyed, vulgar, and frightening to a little kid like me. Most had not eaten and were sick from downing cheap wine on empty stomachs; she would make sandwiches, fill a cooler with water, and pass it out to them. Justifiably she could have called the cops and had them arrested or worse. She sincerely believed, “ love thy neighbor as thyself.”
