Put a Quarter on It

Before 8-tracks, cassettes, iPods, DVDs, and Spotify, record players existed at the pinnacle of the medium. You would put a grooved disc on the turntable, lower the arm with a diamond-tipped stylus, and, voilà, scratchy, toneless music. Nostalgia buffs point out the beauty of the pops, blips, and perversions in the music as if it were Mona Lisa’s smile. The truth is, except for the memories of great basement parties and black lights, the music’s sound was nowhere near the quality of today. One trick I remember distinctly was when that pinpoint needle wore out on your record player, and the beat would skip; putting a quarter on the arm to weight it down helped get you through one last slow drag and kiss.

Unfortunately, the Republican party is slowly dragging us into authoritarianism, filled with scratches, skipping the beat of America’s heart, and not a handful of quarters would make a difference. Hanging on to the fevered dreams of the south rising again is destructive but not surprising from GOP voters. Talk of civil war from the never-Bideners has become reasoned chatter amongst the base of the Republican party. The real problem lies in its leadership, mainly Mitch McConnell—the Senate minority leader. Immediately following the insurrection, McConnell pointed to Trump’s complicity; the former President was “practically and morally responsible” for the attack on the Capitol on January 6.,” he said. Now, he brazenly tells you he will unequivocally support the former President if he is his party’s nominee.

So does that mean Mr. McConnell supports immorality?

Senator McConnell, in an interview with Jonathan Swan of Axios, proved his loyalty to power and politics over country and morality through his support of  Georgia Senatorial candidate Herschel Walker. [Walker] has admitted he has some troubles in his life,” but lately has “been an exemplary citizen,” said McConnell.Besides being an acclaimed football star, Walker’s background includes credible accusations of putting a gun to his wife’s head and abusing former girlfriends. Politically Walker has proved himself to be a complete neophyte opining on everything from evolution to energy independence with baffling unfamiliarity. Again, despite his lack of qualifications and quality McConnell has pledged his support.

Sarah Palin, who recently announced her re-entry into politics, was criticized for the bridge to nowhere during her tenure as Governor of Alaska. Now it seems—there is no longer a bridge too far for the GOP faithful; the gap has widened into the Grand Canyon.

The news media is becoming part and parcel of the normalization of liars. CBS has bought into access over truth with the hiring of former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney. The entertainment media has turned what should be pariahs like Rudy Giuliani and Sean Spicer into singing and dancing sequined bedazzled stars. Seventy-one percent of any group addicted to either conspiracy, lies, violence, or authoritarianism is not the fringe it is the philosophy. The Democratic party has authored the most positive social and economic changes in the country, starting with FDR’s administration. The legitimization of destructive philosophy forces Democrats into debates that give an air of validity to GOP lies, violence, and authoritarianism.
