Approximately twenty-eight percent of the American electorate, identify themselves as conservatives or Republicans. The Republican Party has tried repeatedly to convince us that if a true conservative would run they would win on principled values.
Well they had their chance and they chose race baiting, xenophobia and pseudo violent rhetoric from their new leader Donald Trump. Of the declared Republicans, sixty percent of them are now leaning or have fallen over Donald Trump. All the influential Party voices, radio personalities, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, Alabama Senator, Jefferson Beauregard “Jeff” Sessions and Texas Congressman, Louis Buller “Louie” Gohmert, think the problem with conservatism is the moderation of candidates like Mitt Romney and John McCain. Senator McCain got an attack of conscience and would not call President Obama a foreign A-rab in the 2008 campaign and Mitt Romney could not convince the masses (at least 47 percent of them) of his Severe Conservatism in 2012, in other words they were not racist enough.
Alabama Tea Party-Senator Jeff Sessions, has thrown his support to a man, Texas Tea Party- Senator Ted Cruz, berates as having New York liberal values, candidate Donald Trump. Mr. Cruz has steadfastly exhibited all the theocratic, stodgy, low information rhetoric that appeals to its principled constituents, but can’t get that dog to hunt; Indiscriminate war mongering, tax breaks for those who least need it and a return to a health plan Democratic Florida Congressman Alan Grayson, described as the Republicans, “Don’t Get Sick” plan. Mr. Trump has supported limits on assault weapons, abortion rights and now he has gone so far as to let a transgender woman, Caitlyn Jenner, use a bathroom in one of his buildings. These are hardly the credentials of strict Republican Obliviousness, but his foray into liberalism is excused as long as he threatens the beating of Black protesters, bans immigrants and treats women like members of a harem. Racism and sexism trumps big C conservatism. You can almost hear the collective hearts of bigots flutter every time Mr. Trump doubles down in some incoherent dogmatic tirade. Be still my heart that wants to beat Muslims.
A 15-year-old girl was maced and groped by an alleged Trump supporter. A reporter accused his campaign manager of accosting her, Black protesters have been threatened and punched, a Middle Eastern woman who wore a peace offering t-shirt, to one of his un-hooded meetings, was made the object of ridicule and scorn. Somehow I’ve missed the domestic or foreign policy initiatives, the fiscal recalibration or the specifics of how we will be more secure. Just recently Mr. Trump, who had previously praised the building of The Great Wall of China, accused the Chinese of figuratively, raping America. I thought that was the domain of the Mexicans?
His parade of insulting comments, gestures and mockery has yet to find a limit. So as the Republican party throws its 1940 LaSalle sedan in reverse and backs into the driveways of Bull Connor and George Wallace, remember, they don’t want a racist they want a true Republican. I remember a Mark Twain quote, “It is easier to fool people than to convince people they have been fools.”
