With the news media lapping at the toes of the former Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, save for a few like MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace, no wonder the GOP bar for redemption is set so low. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden is fighting the headwinds of oversized media expectations, conservative propaganda, ridicule from the right, and resistance from at least two recalcitrant Democratic Senators of consequence. Mr. Biden spearheaded the passage of an unprecedented infrastructure package, never before seen in this nation. Yet media luminary Chuck Todd called it an epilogue to the upcoming losses for Democrats in the midterms because, in his estimation, the Infrastructure Bill came too late. “That event might have been impactful in August or September or October. It feels more like an epilogue to the ending of what’s going to—might not be a good story for Democrats in 2022,”said Todd.
On the other side of the ledger, praise is heaped upon “woke” Republicans for admitting the obvious, that former President Trump did not win the 2020 election and the insurrection was terrible. Both Republican representatives Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney voted against the Covid-19 relief package and the voting rights bill. Yet Cheney and Kinzinger are media darlings simply for admitting the truth. The thirteen Republican members of the House of Representatives that allowed Mr. Biden a bipartisan victory on infrastructure are still facing death threats. A less than rational member of the Republican caucus [Marjorie Taylor Greene] published their names and phone numbers, setting them all up for verbal and possible physical retaliation from their base. Yet the big story of the weekend was that Vice President Kamala Harris is a demanding boss.
Ms. Harris has been given the three most impossible jobs in politics, and not being able to wave a magic wand is being held against her. Her portfolio includes solving the root of the immigration problem at the border, a dismal failure of every administration since Reagan, solving the problem of racial and social justice, an ongoing problem since 1619, and voting rights. Her previous contemporary, Mike Pence, was in charge of putting a happy face on 600,000 deaths due to the mishandling of Coronavirus; yet Dr. Fauci is the villain. The press writes about conflicts between the Oval Office and the VP’s office, yet Donald Trump stood by waiting and watching for the possible lynching of his Vice President.
The media has allowed the Republican party to debate a violent insurrection and a slow-moving coup, sometimes without immediately calling foul. The latest mantra for the party that investigated Benghazi for years played footsie with birtherism, perpetuated quack cures for a killer virus, and embraces those who believe that Democrats drink the blood of scared babies, now says about the insurrection, move on, nothing to see here. In 1765 enlightenment thinker François-Marie Arouet, known by his nom de plume, Voltaire, wrote, “Those Who Can Make You Believe Absurdities, Can Make You Commit Atrocities.” The Republican party has become absurd, electing Donald Trump, banishing Liz Cheney, and publishing anime fantasizing about the murder of a colleague. I fear the January 6th coup attempt was a dress rehearsal, and “Common sense is not so common.” ~ Voltaire.
