Opinion: Eyes Open America, or You are Next

There is a saying in playground basketball games, no harm, no foul. That may be fine for Sidney Deane and Billy Hoyle, but the United States’ sanctity is a different story. Saying that democracy is at stake seems to elicit two feelings, one, that Democrats are hyperbolic or Republicans are suspiciously apathetic. I work in an environment of educators, some of whom migrated to this country, and others are second or third-generation children of immigrants. Those who escaped autocratic regimes cannot believe that an attack on the Capitol Building of the United States is debated as if it had some legitimacy. Not a debate by a couple of guys at the gas station or around the water cooler by employees in Brooks Brothers suits but in the halls of Congress.

Proof of the weird state of American politics is when Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) asked Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) a question that should have elicited a slam dunk answer. The question from Raskin was simple:

Raskin: “Well, who won the election is my question, Mr. Biggs? I’m happy to yield to you for that. Who won the election in Arizona, Donald Trump or Joe Biden?”

Biggs: “We don’t know because, as the audit demonstrates very clearly, Mr. Raskin, there are a lot of issues with this election that took place.”

As incredulous as Mr. Biggs’ answer was, he went on to bizarrely accuse Mr. Raskin of lying. This was an odd exchange even for Republicans whose idea of truth is pointing fingers and ignoring their culpability. Setting aside the sixty or more court cases with some judges laughing Rudy Giuliani and his band of merry barristers out of court and a so-called audit affirming President Biden’s victory in Biggs’ home state of Arizona, Biggs insisted on acting the buffoon. One of two things is happening to Republicans in Congress, and Republican state legislatures, unabashed liars, are running America or catering to a constituency of fools.

I have heard the phrase “owning the libs” tossed around, but this has to be more than just one party finger-poking another. The Republican party has pulled America into a hate-filled psychosis. All of the ills of GOP politics are not the fault of the former President. What is clear is that excusing and normalizing lying, cheating, and in some cases, murder, as with Jamal Khashoggi, is contagious. Parents picking up their kids are being chased by yelling, sign-carrying protestors trying to escape the onslaught. Protestors who are not satisfied with risking the life of their children by not getting vaccinated or wearing masks are angry at parents who choose to do so. So mad, in fact, they recently forced mothers to scurry away with their children in tow and verbally defend themselves and their kids.

Remember, we are talking about  are 6 to 12-year olds who are subjected to active shooter drills; just Wednesday was a shooting inside a Texas school. Raiding the Capitol was not a wake-up call; harassing nurses and school board members was not a wake-up call; now, it is our children. So imagine being confronted by an angry mob of parents, yelling at your mom and accusing your parents of traumatizing you, or worse yet, kill you. Who or what is left?
