The Gay Scapegoat

I was born and raised in America and for 60 years I had been brainwashed into a false belief.  For the vast majority of my life, I’ve been told gay people should make me uncomfortable.  The uncomfortable feeling should not be based on any criminal behavior, impact on my life or any tangible proof that life will be irrevocably changed, it is simply because, “it is icky.”

Statistically, all of the sexual crimes, including pedophilia, attributed to gay men and women are generally perpetrated by your straight Uncle Joe or kindly old Auntie Mame.  By the way, I loved  Edgar Buchanan and Rosalind Russell. The State of North Carolina has embroiled itself in a controversy of its own making. The State legislature, has decided to institute a feel my Adam’s apple law, to determine who uses which public restrooms. Supposedly these, nakedly discriminatory, laws are to protect women, men and children from a man in a dress, or a lady in chinos, from infiltrating the inner sanctum of gender specific bathrooms to rape and pillage.  For those of you who do not know, Buck Angel is a balding, tattooed, muscular, female to male transgender porn star. Picture the uproar of him in the ladies’ powder room at the local McDonalds.

The sad part is, he would be there to relieve himself just like the rest of us.  Republicans are good at messaging, I must admit.  Painting the picture of some hulking, bearded man in a dress and heels stalking your wife in the women’s bathroom, conjures up all sorts of fears and irrational reactions.  Sort of like building a fifty-foot wall to ban, bomb throwing, raping, job taking, immigrants. In effect, the law paints a bulls eye on the breast of transgender women and a kick below the belt to transgender men.  The feeling that somehow I can’t worship how I want, or pray the way I always have, will be challenged because someone has to pee in the stall next to me, is patently ridiculous.

The amount of hubris it takes to believe that gay men and women find all cis gendered people so appealing that they can’t help but attack, is so absurd it boggles the mind.  Let’s all relax, there is little chance J. Edgar Hoover, Jim Nabors or Raymond Burr, would or could have sneaked into a public toilet in a dress and you not notice.  Even if they did, I think they would be there for the same reason you are…
