The exponential jump in right-wing extremists groups began at the beginning of the first Obama Administration. It seems these ‘unregulated’ militias apply the wording in the 2nd amendment selectively. The opposition to the last administration started with a million women who donned distinctive pink woven caps and dared the former president to grab them. They peacefully exercised their right to assembly and free speech. They did not mass in faux military training camps, like cosplay soldiers dressed in army surplus gear. The current President [Joe Biden] by his own admission, owes a debt to black Americans, especially black women, who had his back. Although warnings have abounded since former President Obama received a report by his Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano, and authored by security analyst Daryl Johnson, both the Bush and Trump administrations eschewed any idea of white supremacy terrorism. They instead chose to appease their base of radicalized bigots. George W. Bush called the report a “hit job on conservatives.”
The Grand Old Party has allowed the gun culture and philosophy of might makes right to flourish so healthily in their party, that Democratic members of Congress fear that a Republican colleague may shoot them on the House floor. Republican Reps. Lauren Boebert, Andy Biggs, and Rick Allen have bolstered their beliefs by purposely trying to elude weaponry detection equipment. Just yesterday a video of Marjorie Taylor Greene, in literal pursuit of a survivor [David Hogg] of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, that killed 17, surfaced with Greene alerting the teen she was armed. Hogg, who exercised the better part of valor, in a later interview said, “I was told growing up, it's just better not to respond to bullies and just walk away.”
Is it too far-fetched to ask; had Hogg turned and confronted Ms. Greene would she have shot him?
Although Ms. Greene was not a member of Congress at the time of her stalking Mr. Hogg, she has spouted other spurious and inflammatory claims, most just out and out lies. I wish these people would stop hiding behind the 2nd amendment, and just say they love the feel, the power, and the devastation of shooting guns; I would at least have the opportunity to take cover in their presence. The cogent part of the 2nd Amendment, important to the advocates of private gun ownership reads, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The murderer of seventeen at Douglas High was not part of a ‘well-regulated militia’ neither was the group of murdered teens a threat to the security of a free state.
The slippery slope-fallacy gun owners use to oppose any regulation on ammo, which is what Democrats have asked for, flies in the face of the word regulated. By definition, we have a well-regulated militia, it is calledthe National Guard. So, I do not need Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, or Three Percenters, who hide behind an amendment meant to secure liberty, not cowardice.
