15 Days and Counting

We are fifteen days from electing the next President of the United States. Honestly, if you are still one of the undecideds, I would love to hear your reasons. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden was widely criticized for saying if you do not vote for him “you ain’t black.” Other than the obvious colloquial choice of language for appeal, I do not disagree. Politicians for years have catered to groups either through expressionist language, the dropping of G’s at the end of words for instance, or eating corndogs at a midwestern fair to connect. I am a fundamentalist voter, not in a spiritual sense but a practical sense. I have long banged my head against walls over the support of the Republican party by a group calling themselves the Log Cabin Republicans. The Log Cabin Republicans are a gay rights political advocacy group that uses the motto, “Inclusion Wins.”

Sure, the LGBTQIA community is no different from any other community with varying economic issues, social justice issues, or patriotism. That is where my simplicity takes over. How can you support a political ideology that for years has had the goal of denying your humanity? One of the reasons Amy Coney Barrett was nominated to the Supreme Court was in hopes of reversing policy advances for the gay community. In my view that is like saying, support me although I hate your existence. No matter how much you applaud tax reduction, or abolishment of regulations if someone prefers you dead; does it matter?

For the Black community, Mr. Trump has denied that systemic racism exists, despite the wealth gap, healthcare gap, educational gap, housing gap, and most importantly the daily threat to black lives. I have said many times before I hold my breath every day as a black father awaiting the sounds of my son’s voices at the end of each day. My sons are not criminals, or ne’er do wells, but that really should not make a difference, killing a black person because they annoy you or refuse to bow under the thumb of oppression is unacceptable. If that were not enough, disparaging an entire people by calling their cultural beginnings excrement, cursing the mothers of black athletes (the term SOB is a direct insult to mothers), and putting a known group of thugs and terrorist on “stand by” speaks for itself.

Comedian Bill Burr has been taken to task for his recent appearance on Saturday Night Live. Burr called out white women for their sudden wokeness and throwing white men under the bus for years of racism in the guise of toxic masculinity.  Burr asserts they were watching quietly accepting their partner's racism because, in the end, it protected their privilege; his truth woke the painful reality.

From Sojourner Truth to Harriet Tubman; Fannie Lou Hamer to Shirley Chisholm and now the founders of Black Lives Matter, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi; who picked up the legacy of the books, rifles, placards, and the congressional pin of their foremothers and not only stayed woke but shook others in the process.  For all women, men, and people of conscience, to paraphrase the words of lawyer, activist, and professional sports executive Ese Ighedosa, well-behaved women rarely make history.

Vote in 2020 for Change—and your lives.
