I Want the Old Normal

Today when we hear the words ‘new normal’ it generally relates to living life with Covid-19. The Coronavirus has altered lives not only in the crowded cities and cozy suburbs of America but in the Brazilian favela and the bowels of the London Underground. A large amount of the over 140,000 deaths so far in the U.S. were preventable. Groups of conservatives, pseudo-Christians and those intent on trolling liberals have made masks wearing a sin and make no demands that the Commander-in-Chief, implement a battle plan. Their new normal is wait, hope the party of anti-science prays it away, and bury our dead.

Compare and contrast is sometimes a useless exercise in futility but I cannot help but to think this would not have happened in 2008 under Mr. Obama or if Hillary Clinton had been elected in 2016; would we be sitting on our hands wondering if somehow inserting [anally, I suppose] a UV light or drinking aquarium cleaner would cure us? No, I am not unsympathetic to a frightened couple in their 60s, who heard the President talking about [hydroxy]Chloroquine, I am however not accepting the new normal of a naïve president who cannot spell the word Hydroxychloroquine, advancing medical cures. I like the old normal when a thoughtful, reflective president says,

"We have to make this a national security priority. We have to mobilize the international          community, get resources in there,"

"We're going to have to get U.S. military assets just to set up, for example, isolation units and equipment there, to provide security for public health workers surging from around the world."President Obama said to Chuck Todd on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Mr. Obama stepped into the breach after criticism from Dr. Joanne Liu of Doctors Without Borders and recommendation from virologist and infectious disease experts, which is the old normal.  I want a president who stares Vladimir Putin in the face and says, “I am putting the Kremlin and other foreign governments on notice,”… I will not hesitate to respond as president to impose substantial and lasting costs,” presumptive Democratic nominee for President Joe Biden said yesterday. Not the equivocating, mumbled-mouthed, response from Mr. Trump, when asked if he thought Russia interfered with the American election,  “I don't know why it would be…..I have confidence in both parties. President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today,”said Trump in 2018.

An American president silent in the face of accusations that a foreign government took out a bounty on its soldiers, an American president soliciting personal business favors from a foreign government, and an American president wishing well an accused pedophile, Ghislaine Maxwell. None of this is normal or new, it is the standard operating procedure for authoritarians; the sacrifice of troops, soliciting bribes and graft, and protecting lawless allies. Now that we are closing in on 100 days till the next presidential election, Mr. Trump is verbally attacking our election process calling it rigged, verbally attacking the U.S. Post Office as tools of some vast left-wing conspiracy and physically attacking Americans who dare to protest his regime.

Vote in 2020 for Change.
