…because it was the Chinese, broken test, no ammunition, the World Health Organization, stupid governors, and now the old standby, immigrants. Since the day Donald Trump stood before a rally crowd on February 28, 2020, in South Carolina and alluded that the coronavirus is part of a “new hoax,” the billows of smoke have been choking us with lies. Mr. Trump’s actual quote was “Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus. They have no clue; they can't even count their votes in Iowa.” he said. “This is their new hoax,” Trump finished. Like most good con men he left just enough wiggle room to say no, no I was not talking about COVID-19 as a hoax, I was berating the Democrats.
So goes the man of smoke and mirrors, reflecting the anger of his base, while blinding them in the fog. Last night after inquiries about his new plan to redirect the finger of blame, Mr. Trump said he would ban immigration, both legal and illegal, with a few exceptions. He said he was doing it in an effort to preserve American jobs for Americans. Writer John Burnett in an NPR interview from August of 2019 spoke to Missouri restaurant owner Lynn, who stated that Americans will not take the low paying, unskilled work that immigrants will. When asked how many Midwestern eateries have hired undocumented immigrants she flatly stated, “A hundred percent. You cannot hire American here."
Lynn did not say that the jobs are not offered to American citizens what she was saying is that they will not take them. Currently, 22 million Americans have filed for unemployment in the past month. Pew Research gives an estimated figure of 7.5 million undocumented workers in food service, construction, and health care as currently employed in the United States. Perpetuating the lie that immigrants are taking “our” jobs skirts the truth, immigrants are taking the jobs we are too proud to do. Mr. Trump is using his long-held immigration scare tactics as another distraction to kick dirt to cover his own failures. Often a target of his incendiary bombast, reporter Yamiche Alcindor asked the president if he had a message for the people who have died, and his response was well they love me.
In contrast, when asked about reports of the health of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un the President waxed on about their relationship and how he wished him well, “I’ve had a very good relationship with him. I wouldn’t -- I can only say this, I wish him well, because if he is in the kind of condition that the reports say, that’s a very serious condition, as you know,” Trump said. “But I wish him well.” This is not normal behavior, especially from a man who has barked “America first” not to our enemies, but to our allies on numerous occasions. Of the people, we are counting on for valid and life-saving information, Dr. Birx is appearing to show the first symptoms of Trump fever. The obvious answer to opening massage parlors, tattoo shops, nails salons and barbershops in opposition to social distancing guidelines is ‘of course it is not smart’ but “Deborah’ as Trump often calls Dr. Birx said —“so if there’s a way that people can social distance and do those things, then they can do those things. I don’t know how, but people are very creative.” So as the ship sinks are last hope, the lifeboats, have sprung a leak.
