Not only has the Republican Party allowed Donald John Trump to operate above the law, but they have also sanctioned his acts beyond humanity. In 2013 eight Senators, 4 Democrats and 4 Republicans [The Gang of Eight] made a serious foray into ending America’s much-disputed entry policy for foreign emigres into the United States. This process has been so politicized and gone on so long that one member has died, John McCain, one resigned Jeff Flake, another is bouncing off the re-election hypocrisy wall, Marco Rubio and the other Lindsey Graham has thrown any sense of moral courage under a set of bus wheels traveling at 100 miles per hour.
The Democrats onboard have allowed themselves to be fooled into thinking that good faith is still a part of Republican politics. Senators Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, Robert Menendez, and current presidential candidate Michael Bennett are harvesting the rotten fruit of their labor. Dropped in their baskets of deplorable(s) are children and mothers in cages, denial of legitimate asylum claims and chants of “send her back.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic party languishes in some fantasy notion of Republicans regaining their moral compass and ousting their leader. Donald Trump has undeniably violated campaign finance laws, damaged our relations with 70-year allies, made and encouraged racists chants at pseudo-political rallies, and created a climate where rape, child sex trafficking, and the groping of multiple women is now a point of political debate and not disgust.
What have we come to…?
These affronts to decency have intrigued the media and the American people to the point of distraction. Everyone who follows or writes blogs, journals, and articles detailing the appalling behavior of Mr. Trump knows this, including me, but the temptation to point out evil is too important to pass. In spite of that the downing of an Iranian drone yesterday is important for two reasons: First, America has to question its’ leader as to whether this was true, a shameful admission of distrust in the American President. The Iranian response is probably a face-saving measure but the fact that it is a question is disturbing. Secondly, on the small chance, the Iranians are telling the truth, was this a ploy to avert attention on his unworthiness as the leader of a free nation? What does that say about us? Whether you are a Democrat, Republican, Independent or a member of any other faction, we have questioned the necessity and validity of war but never if an action has taken place.
Eliminating the daft conspiracy theorists who believe we never landed on the moon, when George W. Bush bombed Iraq, we rejected the decision but not that the action happened. When Barack Obama ordered the killing of terrorist Osama bin Laden we literally celebrated and cheered outside the gates of the White House. Debate and efficacy were talked about later, but we accepted the word of the President(s).
How long can America be governed by a ‘liar in chief?’ The President told us yesterday that he quickly cut off the racist hate-filled chants of “send her back” directed specifically at Rep. Ilhan Omar from his adoring crowd in Greenville, North Carolina Wednesday night…
The frightening part is that he may be so deluded that he believes his own lies.
