Two-Track Mind

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is engendering a Democratic schizophrenic mind-meld that has made me both mad and proud of her, depending on the day and my mood. Ms. Pelosi’s long and distinguished career speaks volumes to her competence, intelligence and savvy. First female Speaker of the House and more legislative initiatives moved through Congress than any of her male counterparts in the history of the House of Representatives. Her leadership in recapturing the House in the 2018 midterm elections was a triumph that buoyed the hopes of Democrats trying to stop the runaway Trump train.

The President’s weekend in Trafalgar Square, culminating in a disgraceful interview in front of the line of tombstone monuments to courage in Normandy, France, had me yelling for the Speaker to do something—something bold. Just days before; I was lauding her patience and strategy. Hence, the frenetic track hopping ride liberals are on with Ms. Pelosi.  At this point, it is virtually indisputable that Mr. Trump is a pointless, lackluster man and conspirator against the country he professes to love so much.

In recent days the backroom dispute with House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerrold Nadler has burst into the main hall with Pelosi reportedly opposing the urging of Mr. Nadler to move forward with Impeachment.  While at the same time making a political calculation, thereby raising the ire of a majority of Democrats, Ms. Pelosi is secretly advocating the President be prosecuted and imprisoned after his defeat in the 2020 election. I fully understand Pelosi’s thoughts on holding the House and aiding Chuck Schumer in recapturing the Senate but that must be weighed against what I see as the Democratic mandate to uphold ethical standards. In that way, they [Democrats] maintain the Party’s moral standing above that of the current Republicans.

Every current, former and protesting Republican from George Will, Rick Wilson and Ana Navarro is railing against “situational ethics.” The Democrats cannot and must not be a party to this.

CNN’s John King in an analysis of an NPR/PBS Marist Poll (week of May 31-June 4), portrayed the numbers as a split in Democratic thinking, instead of an endorsement for Pelosi to push forward with Impeachment.  In that poll, 36 percent of Democrats say impeach Mr. Trump, while 37 percent say continue investigating. I interpret that as a plurality of Democrats saying do the right thing. Finishing those numbers 6 percent called for censure and only 15 percent of Democrats say ‘drop it and move on.’  Robert Mueller has been trying to steer this train since the release of his report.

Sure, attempts by the AG William Barr and a host of Conservative talking heads to derail that train have occurred but the fact remains that Democratic lawmakers can pull the switch and get the locomotive back on track at any time.  I am a big fan of Nancy Pelosi and more importantly, I trust her judgment. My point is not to criticize her leadership but encourage her to use it. Ms. Pelosi, in this case, nothing is wrong with having a one-track mind.

Vote in 2020 for Change.
