Liar Side Chats

In 1933 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt used the twitter of his day, radio, to inform and comfort the American people using hope, truth and a New Deal.  President Donald Trump is using lies, little hope and for dessert, a cornucopia of confusing policy. Roosevelt used his voice to reassure a nation that was recovering economically from the Great Depression and on the brink of World War II.  A CBS reporter, Harry Butcher, is credited with giving the radio one-to-ones its now famous name, ‘fireside chats.’ America has a long and storied history of Presidents leading the country through turmoil.  Washington and the American Revolution, Lincoln and the Civil War, Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis and Obama avoiding the economic collapse of western civilization.  History has been and will be kind to these men.

What happened America…?

The 28 or more chats from Roosevelt, that spanned over eleven years, were welcomed insights into the plans of a leader whose words meant something.  Unfortunately, the chats have been replaced by daily press fantasies, narrated by Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and White House twitter spats, authored by Donald Trump.  Even when it is apparently good news it is met with snickers and skepticism.  Remember DACA, the ‘bill of love’ or tariffs will be done ‘in a loving way.’ Who of you believes Donald Trump loves anything or anyone beyond the tip of his nose?  The same Donald Trump who castigated Jeb Bush for suggesting that the desperation of illegal immigration was born from an ‘act of love,’ I am now to believe is full of benevolence.

I cannot remember the last administration that leaked that its’ Press Secretary was called on the carpet for telling the TRUTH egad!

Mrs. Sanders may have inadvertently revealed, Wednesday afternoon, what we all knew to be the truth, Donald Trump cheated on his wife with a porn star, paid for her silence, and is working like a guy with an itchy Twitter finger to keep her quiet.  Once she [Sanders] realized her mistake she went to the fallback position of the President won an “overwhelming victory” and that should settle the matter.  I am taller than my fifteen-year-old grandson but at my age, I cannot outrun him anylonger, the two thoughts are as incongruent as Mrs. Sanders explanation. Republicans say all the time the American people have spoken so… anyway back to our co-star, Mrs. Sanders.  She followed up her gaffe by saying no payments were made, “as far as I know.”‘As far as I know’ may be the most tacit admission of guilt since Bill Clinton debated the meaning of “Is.”

So, the disco ball of distraction spins, showering the room with its’ cascading reflection of lies only matched by the shimmering chaos of the White House.  The staff is afraid, and the Cabinet is either frustrated, resigning or on the verge of revolt.  Meanwhile, Donald Trump is looking for his polyester shirt, rayon bell bottoms, and platform shoes because he is giving us all a ‘Saturday Night Fever.’
