The liberal left is embracing a gaggle of conservative public voices that could derail the expected blue wave, among them; Bill Kristol, David Frum, Michael Steele, Jennifer Rubin and now Mona Charen. This Democratic alliance with old-time conservativism, allowing the avoidance of their inglorious history, is noteworthy only because of their perceived switching of elephants in midstream. The daily rejection of their creation, Donald Trump, is like a repentant Dr. Frankenstein screaming that the monster he fashioned is loose on the town. Kristol brought us the forerunner to Trumpism, Sarah Palin. David Frum, a former speechwriter for George W. Bush, who now sounds like a leftist, attempted to blame the shooting of former Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords on reefer madness.
Michael Steele, who towed that party line so tightly it could have hung him, is a recent liberal adoptee, no longer able to hide from the blatant racism of Trump. If that were not enough CPAC (Conservative Political Action Committee) Communication’s Director, Ian Walters, recently said, “he was a black guy” positing that as reason for Steele’s election as the first African American elected to the post of Republican National Committee Chairman. Washington Post conservative columnist, Jennifer Rubin, now makes regularly scheduled appearances on MSNBC trying desperately to preserve the last vestige of her Republican fiber. She has gone so far as to renounce her Republican membership, at least until the next tax cutting, entitlement slashing, climate killer, who is not a pig to women, comes along. Mona Charen joined the chorus line of the new conservative high kickers Sunday morning on MSNBC. After her attack of truth-telling at the CPAC Convention held in Oxon Hill, Maryland this past weekend, Charen is now ducking the arrows of conservatism's outrageous fortune.
I am not opposed to the willingness of anyone to place principle above politics; my question is, how long that conversion will last? A number of Republicans swore publicly, one to his fifteen-year-old daughter that he [ Jason Chaffetz] would never vote for a man [Trump] who proudly advocated the groping of women. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) who literally called Trump a “kook” has perpetrated the ultimate act of betrayal by embracing Trump and turning his political back on his longtime brother in arms, the very ill war hero, Senator John McCain (R-AZ). It appears it is only a matter of time before the hypnotic appeal of Trump, that has mesmerized his fans, elicits googly-eyes from his opponents, enter Bob Corker, Marco Rubio, and Rand Paul. Do not look into his eyes Jeff Flake… Even Ted Cruz, whose father was accused by Trump of plotting to kill former President John F. Kennedy, backs Trump even after the President publicly insulted his wife’s looks.
Lots of analogous phrases come to mind, beware of false prophets which come to you in sheep’s clothing, don’t take any wooden nickels or more applicable the tale of the Trojan Horse. Sometimes we can allow the adversary to be delivered into our midst as a gift and inside is the very thing that can destroy you. Be wary of this trojan horse’s soldiers, Kristol, Frum, Steele, Rubin, and now Charen. Remember it is not holding onto the reins of power that frightens them, it is the wooden-headed nag leading the herd.
