If your position of strength is “both sides do it” maybe a reexamination of your position is required. The whining from Republicans seems to always end with, ‘but Hillary Clinton’ when Donald Trump says or does something inexplicable. This is getting to be more than silly it is really annoyingly childish. Which of you would excuse your child’s shoplifting of a candy bar “with an excusatory point of their finger at a friend and the words, “he did it first.” That’s ok… would not be your response but that seems par for the course these days in the Republican Party. Maybe I am looking at the current political discourse through Democratic rose-colored glasses, but I rarely hear the both sides do it paradigm from Democratic partisans.
I am changing that, at least for today…
Honestly, sometimes I wish the liberal party would cast their line in the waters of GOP hypocrisy and not just be bait, the stream is teeming with comparisons. Compare the first year of the Trump presidency with the first year of the Obama presidency, and the Republican response, okay enough said. Part of what is happening to Democrats now, is that they are grabbing onto the temporary sanity of anti-liberal idealist for solace; Columnist Jennifer Rubin, who accused the Obama administration of covering for the New Black Panther Party and writing that Jewish Democrats who supported the appointment of Chuck Hagel ( as Obama’s Secretary of Defense)were akin to those who “failed to prevent the holocaust;” Steve Schmidt, who is now the go to Republican thorn in the side of the Trump administration, brought us Sarah Palin; Nicolle Wallace and Ana Navarro one a former George W. Bush official and the latter a long time Republican strategist and Jeb Bush supporter. Their opinions are to be respected but make no mistake they are not Democratic allies.
The outlandish Republican hypocrisy is mind-boggling. The party of law, order, and flag-waving, in an effort to save potentially who may be the biggest traitor to ever occupy the White House, is trashing some of the most loyal in their law enforcement constituency, former FBI Director James Comey, Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. I want to make note I am not using the word traitor lightly. Again using the ‘both sides do it meme,’ Republicans disparaged President Obama with comments by none other than Donald Trump who repeatedly stated, “Obama is the founder of ISIS.”
That same deafening silence you are straining to hear about Republican National Committee fundraiser Steve Wynn that was blaring from GOP bullhorns about movie producer Harvey Weinstein is not forthcoming, believe me. The hue and cry about statements made by Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama were under microscopic scrutiny, and rightly so, but Trump is just being Trump, according to media and pundits. The manifestation of all the lying, avoidance and sheer fantasy issued by the White House and the current President on a daily basis are becoming an impossible task to monitor. One recent example, the President has spoken for weeks about African-American unemployment reaching new all-time lows. What he fails to mention is that the low has only dropped less than 1 percent under his reign and is a continuation of the 5 percent drop under the Obama years. When Obama took office in January of 2009 the official unemployment rate for African Americans was 12.7 percent the day he left it was 7.7 percent currently it is 6.8 percent, statistically that is less than a percent point change since Trump took office.
Like most of the anti-Obama and race driven themes in his head, taking credit for the Obama economic turnaround has to satisfy him most. Ah, but “both sides do it…right?”
