It seems the White House is giving its own three-fingered salute to America, Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller and Jeff Sessions. White House advisor Steve Bannon, touted the propaganda news organization, Breitbart, as the platform for the alt-right. Stephen Miller, who has been soliciting for ownership of a brown shirt since high school is reportedly next in line as WH Communications Director. That leaves Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was so reviled as a racist that his own party voted against his appointment as a federal judge in 1986.
Bannon has sought control by securing the title of the ‘President’s new brain;’ Miller is trying to alter the press, the Republican base and Donald Trump with his obvious performances for an audience of one; and beleaguered Jeff Sessions, has been at the tip end of Donald Trump’s frantic finger, pushing the delete button for weeks.
The one thing all these men have in common is Donald Trump’s vision of making, White- America Dominant Again. Never mind the changing demographics or the American promise to give us “your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” A week ago, Stephen Miller went on a screed against less than meritorious, in his eyes, immigrants that begged the question, “what is happening to the American dream?”
The son of a Polish(Ukrainian) father and German-Swiss mother, partnered with an adoptee to form one the largest companies in the history of the world. The Apple vision of Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs may have withered on the vine like discarded grapes had the new Merit-based immigration policy proposed by the Trump administration been in effect before 1950. Why this need to return to the good ole days of, Jim Crow, back alley abortions, misogyny, and xenophobia?
It could be the fear of letting go, letting go of dominance, control and a false sense of superiority. I am a Black, 60’s liberal, born in Washington, DC. I saw the professional football team to whom I blindly root, be the last to integrate. I saw armed federal troops on my street corners following the assassination of MLK Jr. and watched my neighborhood burn to the ground. I mourned the assassination of a second Kennedy a few months later. I watched Richard Nixon enter the WH on the surf of flag waving patriotism and leave, drowning America in the eyes of the world.
Now I am watching the new leader of the free world play to a ravenous horde of red hat waving, grinning sycophants, hoping to return to yesteryear. This is not patriotism or America, this is plain old hatred and fear hiding behind a curtain of supposed economic uncertainty. Institutions of justice are being challenged, America’s information resource is being undermined and Republican politics is slowly marching toward an arena of sound-bites, halfwits, and nitwits; and they have found their king, Donald John Trump. We flirted with a princess in Sarah Palin but as the English would say, “we have gone the full Monty.”
The Democratic party has started its descent into the crab barrel this past week. The purist attacked Kamala Harris, Deval Patrick, and Cory Booker, their main crime, they are not Bernie Sanders. Democrats; had Hillary won, with all her corporate connections, Wall Street speeches and fear of her war footing, it would have gotten us much closer to our ultimate goal. We no longer need to consider the alternative to Hillary we are living the nightmare now.
