I watched the tv program the ‘View’ this morning and the four-panelist spent the first eight-minute segment gnashing their teeth over Kathy Griffin’s tasteless visual attempt at a joke, depicting the beheading of the President of the United States. After nearly five minutes into the segment highlighted with hand wringing, finger pointing and speculation of her [ Griffin] career ending, Joy Behar interjected some sanity. She reminded the live audience and the viewers at home that Donald Trump is planning to abandon the Paris Climate Change agreement. Even North Korean leader Kim Jong-un who is constantly depicted as a maniacal and ruthless tyrant is part of the agreement to save the planet.
Unfortunately, the American public is debating things like whether Kathy Griffin, who has trafficked in garish humor over the years with the same dissociative qualities of tasteless porn, and the meaning of “covfefe.”
America is caught in a cyclone, with the swirling winds of progress being muted by a funnel of purposeful obliviousness.
The lure of the inescapable distractions from genuine issues is hypnotizing. I rolled around on the mat of my mind this morning debating whether to even mention Ms. Griffin. The President is single-handedly, if not under active Russian duress, trying to end the U.S. participation in NATO. The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs is now under its third attack by a Republican led White Houses. The OFCC is a division of the Department of Labor that ensures affirmative action statutes are followed and guards against racial discrimination in contracting. So where do we go from here? Do we recoil at the hypocrisy of attention seeking performance protestors like Milo Yiannopouolos, who months ago was the toast of the Anti-Muslim conservative movement? It is becoming harder to distinguish news from the sparkling baubles, or the twit from his twitter.
America is a place of questionable freedom, unfair opulence and earned redemption. We are now faced with maintaining a democracy that has seen the blood of red, black and white men shed in its infancy; grow through a war for independence and an internal struggle for moral footing. The country has survived two world conflicts, fought and exploited Asian aggression and has been mired in a 16-year fight to either assert religious superiority or tightly hold the line against vicious terrorism.
America’s continuing issues will benefit the world community if the country keeps a tight rein on the things it holds dear, ‘Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.’ It should be noted that Ms. Griffin has issued a full and unequivocal apology. Not, if anyone was offended, or I was taken out of context. Mr. Trump take notice, an apology sometimes makes you stronger.
