April Ryan has a been a journalist for 27 years and a distinguished White House correspondent for twenty of those years. Except for the late Gwen Ifill, April Ryan, may nationally, be the most recognizable black female reporter in America. Days prior to President Trump trying to humiliate her, by asking during his press conference if she would set up a meeting with the CBC, The Congressional Black Caucus, Mr. Trump… Ms. Ryan had a run-in with his ambassador for Black Outreach, Omarosa Manigault http://www.eurweb.com/2017/02/omarosa-april-ryan-drama-escalates-secret-recording-tiff/#
. A coincidence, I think not. Ms. Manigault once claimed Trump’s opposition would “bow” to him eventually. I think this was an opportune effort, to try and reduce Ms. Ryan to the role of, maid, in a hastily called press conference. Maybe a public pat on the back of Ms. Manigault for the confrontation. The sting of humiliation hit the consciousness of white America this morning, but Black America felt the gut punch immediately, because we have all been there. African Americans of my age and the contemporaries of Ms. Ryan have our own stories and we it happens we do not excuse the behavior we move forward by not acknowledging the humiliation. April Ryan appeared stunned momentarily when asked to do a “secretarial” function, but maintained her composure and the, ‘don’t give power to the offender,’ instinct kicked in
.
I attended a function in 2004 in Amherst, New York. A quiet little suburb of Buffalo, with a majority white population. It was a fund raiser for the friend of a co-worker who was dying of brain cancer. I was forty-eight years old, the father of a Navy Seaman, my eldest, and a computer science major, my youngest. I was the owner of a fraud investigation firm and the holder of a degree in business. It was a black-tie affair, I wore a Halston tuxedo with satin lapels and a pair of gleaming black patent leather shoes, I had bought from Barney’s in New York. On my wrist was a gold Seiko watch with a matching gold pinky ring. I was educated, well dressed and would be the equal to any man or woman there.
I arrived fashionably late with my date and as I was taught by my grandmother, I stopped after my date entered and held the door for two white women that were behind us, because that is what a gentleman does. The older women reached in her clutch purse, pulled out a five-dollar bill, tipped me and asked, “will you be here later to retrieve my car,” because I seemed so “nice.” I recalled that moment when I saw the struggle on April Ryan’s face to regain her dignity. I gave in to the temptation in 2004 and satisfied what white privilege looks for, an angry Black man.
Today Omarosa will reach out in her job as Black Out-Reacher and talk about how unpleasant Ms. Ryan can be and how she worked to calm her. She will tell you the impression of Mr. Trump as a racist and anti-Semite are alternative facts. Ask Jewish reporter Jake Turx, who Trump tried to patronize and humiliate http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/trump-tells-jewish-reporter-to-sit-down-and-be-quiet-after-question-about-rising-anti-semitism/article/2615067 or April Ryan who Trump tried to marginalize, if that is true.
