I thought she’d win…

I allowed myself to have one last dinner conversation about the presidential election before the new year begins. Christmas dinner was lovely, family surrounding me, the laughter of children and the shadow of after dinner cleanup was ever present.

From the youngest voting age guest and family to the older members, the idea of voting for Hillary Clinton was always couched with a self-professed righteous indignation. Phrases like, “I held my nose,” or “she’s not as bad as…” were routinely bandied about.  How are liberals so easily influenced by people who openly oppose all their principles.  Everyone at the table wanted better healthcare, being an African American, voter rights were a vigorous topic, keeping the Obama agenda was paramount, but still, full commitment to Mrs. Clinton always came with a qualifier.

As a staunch Hillary supporter, I asked why?  What I got back was a litany of purity and righteousness pronouncements. “Bernie has never changed,”“Hillary spoke to Goldman Sachs,”“the lobbyist will run the country” and the kicker, “I can’t trust her.” Bernie supporters are now angry that he bought a six-hundred thousand dollar summer home (using his wife’s inheritance)www.burlingtonfreepress.com/.... Donald Trump is filling his cabinet with the crème de la crème of one percenters, lobbyist are blissful and a man who reportedly lies three out of every four statements is due to occupy the White House on January 20th www.cantonrep.com/....

Maybe I missed something but purity and Donald Trump are not synonymous.

We have all heard and recited to ourselves and neighbors the long list of Trump transgressions.  My problem is with those who seek perfection and its absence are willing to condone a liar and self-identified sexual predator.  Maybe I am asking too much; but we seem to be driven more by hatred than hope.  President Obama ran on hope and was abandoned by his faithful less than two years later in the midterm elections of 2010.  Gerrymandering and voter suppression were a part of the congressional change but the unwillingness to back candidates who do not bring instant change is astonishing.  Liberal pundits, eight months into his first term, were calling his presidency a failure  prospect.org/....

I thought she’d win because…

The prevailing thought among the Hillary doubters was to maintain their righteousness because their vote would not cause her to lose.  In other words, they would prefer a Hillary presidency to a Donald presidency but they could tell their friends over a latte at Starbucks they stayed pure.  Clinton communication director, Jennifer Palmieri, said she was “proud” of losing  www.washingtonpost.com/....  I understood her standing on principle but political wraslting is like the WWE, a chair over the head is sometimes called for.  Republicans are famous for taking President Obama out of context by using his now infamous ‘bringing a knife to a gunfight’ comment nation.foxnews.com/....  They right-wing have no qualms about painting the President as a dangerous radical ready to shoot his opposition, as if he invented the adage. The next time you feel the need to express regret for your support of Hillary Clinton by offering a preemptive apology, remind the listener that a racist, misogynist, religious bigot and liar is about to represent them on the world stage.

Vote 2018, it’s not too late!
