The Manipulation of Donald Trump

Steve Bannon is determined the “White” House live up to its name.

Steve Bannon, who in print, labeled Bill Kristol a “renegade Jew” and objected to his daughters going to school with Jews has the right ear of the President-elect.  In a presidential campaign that used xenophobic tactics and racial superiority without subtlety, as a strategy, is now preparing to occupy the world’s biggest seat of authority, that should scare us all.  Breitbart News is an online publication dedicated to the eradication of difference.  Mr. Bannon who proudly says his organization is the voice of White Nationalism was chosen as ‘chief strategist’ by Donald Trump.  Much like Karl Rove, I guess Mr. Bannon will be Trump’s brain.

Mr. Trump in the past 48 hours has already demonstrated his capacity to spin like a dreidel.  The Wall may be, “partially a fence;” Obamacare has some things he “may keep” and maybe he cannot bring back all the jobs to the rust belt. President Obama was asked by Barbara Walters in 2008, “as you prepare to lead the country, what is your biggest fear?” Instead of making it about himself, he talked about the people grabbing hold of their democracy and being, “honest, competent” and making “the lives of ordinary Americans a little bit better.” Not the hyperbolic grandiosity of, “only I can fix it” by Donald Trump. Real leadership is recognizing trouble, admitting the need for help and acting upon your moral imperative.  Had President Obama entered office saying, only I can fix it and appointed Minister Louis Farrakhan as chief strategist the outrage would have been immeasurable.

Based on the weakness of fear, America has done precisely that with a man a lot less equipped to resist the urges and in Bannon’s case, the anti-Semitism and racism of his advisers.  Surrogate Steve Cortes, who could not bring himself to resist labeling undocumented immigrants, “illegals,” Corey Lewandowski who was essentially fired for assaulting a female reporter and spokesperson Katrina Pierson who wore a necklace made of faux bullets as some sort of sick campaign statement were bellwethers for what was to come.  I could go on at length at the egregious antics and statements from Trump and his supporters.  For all his bluster President-elect Trump showed us who he was and a large section of America accepted his befuddled nihilism. The country is falling apart; you can be shot walking out your door and a terrorist is around every corner.   I once wrote that fear is great motivator for good and evil.  In this case hatred used fear as a platform.  Much like George W. Bush who used fear and Dick Cheney, Donald J. Trump has chosen to use fear and Steve Bannon. Let me not forget Mike Pence, a theocratic neocon who once signed legislation requiring funerals for aborted fetuses.

The only consolation is that Donald Trump does not have a mandate.

Today is November 14, 2016, with a 1.8 million vote lead in the popular tally and hundreds of thousands more votes still to be counted in the western states, Hillary Clinton is the choice of the majority. For the America that is disappointed but clinging to moral plurality, it does exist. Extending the olive branch of decency is a simple concept, don’t let it wither on the vine.

Vote 2018!
