America’s economy is in a growth spurt. Wages are outpacing inflation; unemployment has maintained a nearly 50-year low. Job creation has defied economic predictions month after month. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)—was signed into law in August of 2022, and the America Rescue Plan did not hasten the rise of inflation, as Republicans would tell you; corporate greed and supply chain issues did that. In the interim, inflation numbers have fallen precipitously—from 9.1 percent in June 2022 to 3.2 percent in October 2023. The numbers show that the American Rescue Plan gave poor families a leg up by reducing childhood poverty. The CHIPS Act will allow the U.S. to again compete on an even footing for the burgeoning world semiconductor market. Evidence of this was a newly announced chips factory in Ohio that broke ground in September of 2022, creating 7,000 immediate construction jobs with a long-term goal of permanent employment for 3,000. Infrastructure ceased to be a Trump punchline for Jon Stewart, with President Joe Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act Bill signed into law in November of 2021.
With so much promise, why is Joe Biden struggling to make headway in the polls?
The Republican Party, who succeeded in its messaging by calling liberals snowflakes, are telling their supporters to ignore facts and listen to feelings. Ignore the fact that your family, friends, and neighbors have jobs. Ignore the news that Grandma can buy a package of chicken wings and still get her insulin prescription filled. Your family holiday trip to Uncle Jim’s house was cheaper because gas prices fell; Ignore that. Instead, listen to the naysayers who tell you your feelings supersede the numbers. Americans have lulled themselves into the idea of a fantasy economy where a loaf of bread can be bought with the same quarter their grandparents paid. This is not to say that many are not struggling, but it does say people can be unrealistic.
As an avowed liberal who has voted for every Democratic President since Jimmy Carter, it pains me to see Democrats falling for the negativity foisted on Joe Biden because of his age. One of the signers of the Constitution [Benjamin Franklin] was 81, and for you modern campers, the next time you get out the solar cooker, thank 99-year-old Charles Greeley Abbot. It is almost forgotten that Joe Biden handily defeated Donald Trump in 2020 because MAGA felt as though it must be a fraud. Despite over 60 court cases, Trump employees publicly saying he knew he lost, and a defamation award of 148 million dollars against one of his lawyers [Rudy Giuliani] for claiming two women were falsifying ballots, Trump supporters still do not feel right.
Now Republicans are telling you, despite crime data proving otherwise, you are not safe because they say, listen to your feelings; the immigrants are poisoning the blood of America. Yesterday morning, former Trump employee and now View co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin postured that she is not sure if Trump should be jailed because it would upset his supporters’ feelings. “I think there’s an interesting conversation to be had about, 'Do we actually put a man who 40 million people voted for in jail,’”Farah Griffin said, ‘or do we put him on house arrest in [Mar-a-Lago] with security and deny him rights?’” Had Gerald Ford allowed Richard Nixon to go to jail instead of worrying about feelings before giving him a pardon, maybe Trump would have thought twice.
