'Til Death Do Us Part

Once the new breed of Republicans is wed to an idea, they believe in literal, ‘til death to America, do us part. Like a pioneer wife, they will endure beatings, philandering, financial stress, and finally, standing by—as their husband takes additional lovers. On January 6, 2021, when thousands of Donald Trump’s jilted lovers approached the Capitol, the beatings ensued. Police officers who for years protected the home of Democracy were beaten, maimed, and eventually killed; cue the gift of flowery language asking for forgiveness from GOP lawmakers. They first said it is not what it looks like. They moved to; she made me do it, ending with a smack to the face of America, telling her, do not believe your lying eyes. The new Republican Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, is releasing tapes of the day trying to convince America that it would have never happened had she not opened the door and lied to her abuser.

Former President Trump—leader of the cult, repeatedly cheated with despots, murderers, and fascists,  going as far as to declare his love for one—exchanging love letters. Trump said of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, “He wrote me beautiful love letters, and we fell in love.” In his secret moments with Vladimir Putin, we can only imagine the intimate, sweet nothings whispered into each other’s ears. Philandering and exchanging money for favors has been a part of the Trump legacy, as evidenced by copies of canceled checks to adult movie star Stormy Daniels and audio with his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, about former Playboy model Karen McDougal.

With 99 percent of Americans working to make ends meet, the GOP decided to pay the one percent of the people who procured America, two trillion dollars of our money in the form of a tax cut. Instead of taking America out for a bite, the GOP fed it a word salad of broken promises.

They go as far as to flaunt their lies and dare their captives to dissent. Trump recently addressed his promise to build a wall and have Mexico pay for it, “I’ll say, ‘What’s gonna happen if they [Mexico] fight,’ I say, ‘The wall gets higher.’ We all had a lot of fun. But I said, ‘Mexico will pay, for a piece of the wall.’ Well, there was no legal instrument to do that.” Like a battered wife, the surrendering silence was deafening.

With years of conditioning by GOP leaders, their followers are willingly denouncing Democracy, illegality, rape, fraud, stealing America’s secrets, and finally abandoning an ally to side with Russia. Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) suggested that Ukraine appease Russia by turning over parts of its territory and that it was in “America’s best interest ... to accept Ukraine is going to have to cede some territory to the Russians.’” Like a spouse hoping to avoid a slap, Vance’s suggestion that Ukraine accept the violation of its autonomy, forgive the aggressor, and apologize for resisting is typical abuser behavior. America has her chance next November to vote against a fate that could end in the death of Democracy. Like saving a battered spouse, it is a collective effort.
