Aside from the ambiguity of the language in the budget proposed in response to paying the country’s bills—by Republicans, it is short on answers and compromise but long on cruelty. When asked about the progress of the debt negotiations, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy gave an answer worthy of salad toppings. McCarthy said he and the president “agree we want to be able to come to an agreement.” We have known for some time the GOP is incapable of governing. Evidence of that is the multitude of promises to address inflation, gas prices, and crime that have gone unattended by the new Republican Congress. Instead, we have gotten missing informants, lying whistle-blowers, Hunter Biden probes, weaponization of the government committees, and moments of clarity when the GOP silenced Marjorie Taylor Greene.
The looming disaster of skyrocketing interest rates, a downgrade of America’s credit rating, the military not getting paid, and seniors looking for checks in empty mailboxes brings cynicism but not alarm to the GOP.
Borrowing and credit card interest rates could go through the roof and jump off. Republicans now want Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called to the carpet.Matt Gaetz wants Yellen to “show her work” along with Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.),who favors subpoenaing Yellen to testify, further endangeringAmerica and the world economy. The proposals come from the one-time Tea Party that has morphed into an even more powerful Freedom Caucus. Acting more like a terror group than a political party they want to hold thepublic hostage to their dreams of the poor, disabled, and children working for the pennies providedthem to eat, maintain a roof over their heads or see a doctor. Like a terrorist group, its numbers are secret, but at least 53 Republican members of Congress self-identify as members. So, the answer to how many Republicans it takes to screw a lightbulb, or a country, is at least fifty-three.
For years, the most conservative wing of the GOP has advocated virtually disbanding the government. Signing lower tax loyalty pledges, disputing the need for a party platform, and in recent years pledging allegiance to the United Trump of America. In 2022 Malcolm Nance released a book entitled, They Want to Kill Americans. The predictable slings and arrows pierced conservative orthodoxy. Referring to hisprevious works, Andrew Sullivan called Nance “a complete fantasist.”
The fact that Gaetz, Norman, and House Financial Services Committee Chairperson Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.)saw the violent overthrow of democracy fail it is not far-fetched; the GOP’s next step is a financial insurrection. Less than ten days remain before Thelma, Louise, and the Freedom Caucus drive America off the cliff and into the canyon. It may be hyperbole to say Republicans want to kill Americans, but the facts do not lie. Conservative governors are arming citizens with weapons of war. In some states, cars have been exempted as deadly weapons if a protester makes you late for your bowling match. Children in schools are the new prize to win a panda bear or a plastic whistle, and the steps of the Capitol became Vietnam for a day. Removing the financial underpinnings of the U.S. with a non sequitur budget battle is another way to make Nance Nostradamus.
