CNN’s New Appeal to the “Poorly Educated?”

Now that the public has gotten a gander at the recent ratings of CNN, it is not surprising that their meandering turn to the right is tanking the station. Mark Joyella penned an article for Forbes outlining the precipitous drop in viewers. According to Neilson, CNN had its worst week (ending March 12) in seven years. It seems CNN is trying to attract marginal FOX viewers and pseudo-Libertarians. Watching their Sunday fare, with a cavalcade of Republican Senators and members of the House, go unchallenged by the host is mind-bending. Statements like the current NY District Attorney [Alvin Bragg] is letting criminals go, despite contradicting statistics, in pursuit of Trump are met with the moderators’ obsequious nods.

Hiring Chris Wallace from FOX as if it were some media coup and touting contrarian/comic Bill Maher as the new voices of reason are not pulling the new management’s chestnuts out of the fire. Wallace’s brand as a hard-hitting fair-minded investigative reporter has been tainted forever by his association with FOX. One might say he brought one of the few reliable voices to the station when, in reality, he brought them unearned legitimacy. Wallace was at the point in his career when he had choices, and he chose FOX and the money over integrity. Now he wants America to sit down with him and listen to him rehabilitate himself as he talks with celebs.

Sticking with CNN is getting to be work instead of information. Last night on what has become a mishmash of host and panelists, former Trump adviser David Urban repeatedly referred to Mr. Trump as The President, making a point to call Trump’s alleged illegality persecution, not prosecution. Urban went on to suggest the rest of the world is asking why we are indicting the President while Xi and Putin are meeting unchecked. At the end of his rant, the host finally thought it wise to indicate Mr. Trump is the former President. It might be smart for pundits and tv hosts to make it a habit to remind Urban and others of his ilk we have a sitting President. One who knows more about geopolitics than Mr. Trump ever bothered to learn. The duplicitous attitude of Urban, former VP Mike Pence, Nikki Haley, and even Ron DeSantis, who tell us they want to move on from Trump—but…. Someone a lot smarter than me once said to ignore everything a politician says before the word BUT.

With his exclusive access to over 40 thousand hours of insurrection video, FOX’s Tucker Carlson introduced every -but-to a violent and deadly riot one could. The GOP also uses the word unprecedented to not hold the former President accountable. Yes, it is remarkable to indict a former president. Still, it s also unprecedented to have a former president suspected of everything from rape, hiding classified documents, and tampering with an election, among other crimes. Much is made of the deterrent factor of a criminal trial and sentencing. America came close to the dissolution of free and fair elections in January 2021. Members of Congress and the former president have called those sitting behind bars patriots. Maybe Trump’s latest calls for protests and possible violence in the streets have been widely ignored because there is a real prospect of jail. Those convicted in the 1/6 insurrection who sing hymns and pledge allegiance every morning and who never received the legal and financial help Mr. Trump promised should be a message to the MAGA crowd. But who knows? Their leader did say he loves the “poorly educated.”
