Most of us have heard the tale of the frog in boiling water. If you try to put a frog in boiling water, it will hop out, but if you place it in the water and heat it slowly, it will sit and cook to death. The Republican party has reached a boiling point, and maybe some frogs are finally hopping out of the pot. A few have refused to croak with the rest: Ben Sasse, Jeff Flake, Mitt Romney, Liz Cheney, and Adam Kinzinger, among others. No, no, by no means have they been friends, to the viewpoint of liberals, but at least they have marked their opposition with ideology and not blind hatred and party loyalty. Conservatives remain anti-abortion, pro-gun, and advocates for the rich, but Sasse warned us about Donald Trump in 2016, and with his impeachment vote in 2021,
”First, President Trump lied that he ‘won the election by a landslide.’ He lied about widespread voter fraud, spreading conspiracy theories despite losing 60 straight court challenges, many of his losses handed down by great judges he nominated. He tried to intimidate the Georgia secretary of state to ‘find votes’ and overturn that state’s election. He publicly and falsely declared that Vice President Pence could break his constitutional oath and simply declare a different outcome. The president repeated these lies when summoning his crowd — parts of which were widely known to be violent — to Capitol Hill to intimidate Vice President Pence and Congress into not fulfilling our constitutional duties. Those lies had consequences, endangering the life of the vice president and bringing us dangerously close to a bloody constitutional crisis. Each of these actions are violations of a president’s oath of office,”read Sasse’s statement.
After almost a week of silence, the leaders of the GOP finally and meekly are starting to condemn their standard bearer’s dining with a white supremacist and an anti-Semite. Mitch McConnell said yesterday, “There is no room in the Republican Party for antisemitism or White supremacy, and anyone meeting with people advocating that point of view — in my judgment — are highly unlikely to ever be elected president of the United States,”said Mr. McConnell. When asked if he would support Mr. Trump if he were the nominee in 2024, McConnell couched it with a generic answer, [my condemnation of antisemitism or White supremacy] “would apply to all of the leaders in the party who will be seeking office,”he said.
Mr. Trump has only worsened his position by pledging to pardon convicted seditionists and insurrectionists if re-elected. One of the tadpoles in the rolling boil of Republican politics, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, confirmed Mr. Trump’s conviction to pardon the insurrectionist with an interview she did with the erstwhile presidential adviser Steve Bannon. According to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the former President and First Lady are “just sick” they’ve been locked up for their crimes, said Greene. The GOP has created a bubbling toxic stew of guns, pseudo-religion, fake patriotism and hatred that is burning so hot, if not careful; it will consume us all.
